slider down or slider off?

hi guys, just curious as to peoples views and preferences regarding slider down or slider off jumps. what do people prefer? and also pro's and con's of both.

I know with WLO Toggles your only supposed to do slider off. Marta told me on the phone before they shipped my gear. Something about the pins getting bent. I forget, I ment to ask her at BD.

Other than that I don't think it matters. Just a pain in the ass changing from slider off to slider up.

And I like slider off. Don't have to mess with the slider when your putting it in the container.

It really depend of the type of objects you jump regulary.

If you find you self jumping the slider off/down envioment all the time why then borther having the slider on?

If you regulary jump slider up but also sometimes us it slider down/off theres no reasson to take it off as you´ll use alot of time doing rigging.

Some people say that a slider can save you in case you have a riser release which might be right,however if you do your self the favor chekking your gear at the exit point or as close at the exitpoint as you can chekking that the cut away cabels are safely through the loops you should be fine..

Personaly i dont have a slider on my rig unless im jumping slider up,besides this summer rampage tour were i had slider at one of my rigs,no matter if it were slider up or down.But only to save time by rigging and to make sure i easily could have a slider up rig fast..

I have not heard a recommendation from Apex on the slider down v. off issue with WLO's.

Apex does not recommend using WLO's for slider down (or off) jumps, because of bent pin issues. Since the WLO's are really only useful on slider up jumps anyway, it shouldn't be too hard to change them out when you pull the slider down.

If you get clarification from Apex on this, please post it.

Hard openings, essentially. The control lines repeatedly yank the white loops into the pins, bending them over time.

I like slider off because when I reach up for my risers, I want to be touching risers, not my slider. But I also understand that the potential for rigging errors always exists if/when I'm switching between slider up and slider off configurations.

I jump slider down. My first fifteen or so jumps were slider off, but once I started jumping my BASE rig out of planes, the rerigging was too much work and I left the slider on for all my jumps.

I started out with a scary clean DexterBase style origami cranebird for my slider, but have since gradually allowed my slider to be sloppier and sloppier to the point where I really don't care much anymore how it lays in the bottom of my container.

I'd say that I now have thirty slider down jumps with a bunched up slider that most people would consider sloppy, and have noticed no adverse affects. Granted, that may very well be a poor statistical analysis. We'll find out tomorrow morning when I'm finally gonna get that 180 on my 75th jump. Woohoo!

It's all body-position and winds, right...

To reiterate what Tom has mentioned above, I am moderately confident that you mean that the WLO toggles should only be used on slider-up jumps.

On slider-up jumps, your brake-lines are routed through the grommets and these lessen the impact forces on the stow-point during opening. Furthermore, as Tom points out, the pin doesn't go through the white loop on slider up jumps.

I can't imagine why the difference between slider-down and -off would matter in the case of WLOs, but I don't mind being corrected on this.

Good Point. I'll check with marta. I onlt have one set of toggles and she didn't ask me if I had regular syko so IDK.

Yeah I am with you on the two Rigs.. I have two and always seem to want to do back to back loads. I have done all slider down, not off. I have had no problem in correcting an offheading opening do to my slider.

I would have to say change the toggles out for each configuration. Don't want to get in a hurry and make a costly rigging mistake.

I've got not problem getting another set of toggles I jsut wasn't aware I needed them for slider off/down jumps.

Could the bent pins be caused from not pre-tensioning the brake lines? I've never had any signs of that and 95% of my jumps are sd. I only leave it on cuz I might get a wild hair up my ass and feel like climbing higher than 300ft. I'm with JaapSuter, I quit caring about how the slider looked going in the container and it hasn't effected my openings.....yet.

I don't really think there's an advantage to doing it the way I do, but if I have the option to do something neatly, or randon/sloppy, I will do it neatly everytime.

I think this applies to everything from inspecting gear to packing, to checking 3-rigns before exiting.

I might go in BASE jumping, but I believe it will not be from mis-rigging or a packing error.

I have always liked to "stack the odds in my favor" and since I honestly don't think we'll be stacking any odds in BASE, I like to take my preparation and knowledge as far as possible in hopes that my effort will pay off when the chips are down.

I tend to think that's 90% of the cause. Every time I've seen someone starting to get bent pins, and had a chance to watch them pack, they've not pre-tensioned the lines.

I think that's a great approach to have! I was just poking fun at ya! It'll be your turn to laugh when I'm all broken up at the bottom of the canyon because my slider (-down) fucked things up...
